5 Things to Do in Brisbane With Kids

Brisbane is a great family-friendly destination, with plenty to see and do for all ages.

If you’re planning a trip to Brisbane with the kids, there are many, many things to do - but here are 5 ideas to get you started:

1. Spend a few hours ... or a day at South Bank

South Bank’s riverside boardwalks and amazing inner-city beach is a children’s favourite. Spend a leisurely morning splashing around in the man-made 'Streets Beach' and then hit the South Bank Surf Club for lunch!

South Bank is also Queensland’s cultural precinct and home to the Performing Arts Centres, the State Library, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum & the always popular Sciencentre. You'll find a great selection of exhibitions and displays to discover.

2. Explore the Queensland Police Museum

The Queensland Police Museum is an intriguing destination for budding young detectives! The museum houses everything from Queensland crimes, investigate techniques, police heritage, and more. There’s also a simulated murder scene for young CSI enthusiasts to test their skills.

The Museum is open from 9am – 4pm  Monday (closed Friday) For weekend visits, it’s open on the last Sunday of the month from February to November between 10am and 3pm.

3. Take a Cruise on Brisbane River

There's a selection of different cruises that you could take on the River - jump on the CityCat ferry for an inexpensive journey, or book in with one of the cruise companies. Many offer lunch, dinner or morning/afternoon tea services.

4. Visit Mount Coot-tha

Mt Coot-tha is both the name of the suburb and the mountain itself. Mt Coot-tha is Brisbane’s tallest mountain and offers a great vantage point with sweeping views. Conveniently located within just a few kilometres of the CBD.

Mt Coot-tha is a must-visit destination for families with the Botanic Gardens, and a planetarium.

5. Enjoy a Picnic in the Park

Brisbane boasts some beautiful gardens and parks, most within easy walking distance of the CBD. Hit the supermarket or one of the local markets, pack a picnic then head off to -

  • The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens is open 24 hours and laid with plenty of walking and cycling tracks. The garden can be entered via George Street, Alice Street, or the Goodwill Bridge.
